Step Back in Time: The Driskill Hotel and the Bootlegger Ball

Nestled in the heart of Austin, Texas, the Driskill Hotel stands as a timeless symbol of luxury and history. Established in 1886 by Colonel Jesse Driskill, a wealthy cattle baron, the hotel has witnessed over a century of Texan culture and history. This August, the Driskill will host Western Sports Foundation’s Bootlegger Ball, presented by the Austin Gamblers and Tecovas, an event that promises to transport guests back to the days of prohibition, gunslingers, and glamour.

A Storied Beginning

Hotel founder Colonel Driskill envisioned a grand hotel that would rival the opulence of European palaces, providing a luxurious haven for dignitaries, celebrities, and travelers alike. The hotel opened its doors on December 20, 1886, boasting 60 rooms, each outfitted with cutting-edge amenities for its time, such as electric lighting and steam heating. At it’s grand opening, the hotel was heralded the Daily Statesman as “One of the Finest Hotels in the Whole Country.”

The Driskill Hotel’s Romanesque architecture was designed by architect Jasper N. Preston, featuring limestone and brick exteriors, majestic arched windows, and a grand columned entrance. Inside, guests are greeted by a lavish lobby with marble floors, stained-glass dome, and ornate furnishings that harken back to a bygone era of elegance and sophistication.

 A Witness to History

Throughout its illustrious history, the Driskill has played host to numerous historical events and notable figures. It served as the temporary Texas White House for President Lyndon B. Johnson during his presidency, and it was there that he awaited the results of the 1964 election. The hotel has also hosted countless celebrities, politicians, and socialites, adding to its storied legacy.
